Lanterns by MischiefofRats Lanterns by MischiefofRats
GUYS I NEED FEEDBACK ON THIS. I'm totally unsure of what I just did. Totally. This whole painting is such a shot in the dark for me. If there's anything messed up you see, even something tiny and stupid, I want to hear about it.

ANYWHO, this is the tentatively finalized version of this WIP:

(Yes, the idea is ripped off inspired by Tangled. :D)

Hm, the whole scene feels a tiny bit warped and whimsical, almost like looking at it through warped glass...which actually, I love xD All of your stuff has a dream-like feel to it, and it's absolutely gorgeous. I was just boredly browsing through my friends' galleries, and happened to stumble apon here.

It's so beautiful and magical. *_* I don't really have much to say in the way of critique.
Your colours are great and the shading on the clouds is excellent. The whole atmosphere is really romantic.

Awesome work.

I have to say that it's a a drawing completely different from the others in your gallery!anyway i think is a good concept and good realization too! but i'd like to see it drawn with traditional methods...beacause il like the style you use (especially the texturing you do with pen)...but that's only my taste!

yeah I know: things to make art always cost to much! :( and artists always haven't got enough money! :) anyway creative people often find out the escamotage, so art will never die:)
Anyway, a part from my shitty thoughts, thank you for having spent some time watching my gallery!

I instantly thought Tangled too haha.
I don't see anything wrong with it. But I'm not really much of a digital artist. I guess the clouds above the mountain look a little too sketchy. I see lines where lines shouldn't be seen.
The lower right hand side, there is this stream of light going thru the houses that looks like a whispy dragon figure. (leave it to me to point out weird stuff). That is all...

Several people have pointed out the clouds looking a little funky--I'm starting to think I might have a stylization-match fail there. XD It's a good point.

Also, I don't see the dragon, but I find it kind of kickass that my brain subliminally adds dragons to things. :D Where do you see it, more specifically?

Thank you for your comment!

This is really gorgeous! I love what you've done with the night sky and the clouds hanging out around the mountains. In terms of things that I would fix, it would be the guy's left shoulder. It's too high... it looks a bit like he's hunched way over.

Also, I would add a bit more texture to the base of the mountain where the town is. With it being so smooth, the town looks a bit disjointed from the ground.

Over all, I think this is a beautiful picture. The mood is nice and I love the way that you painted the lanterns in the sky! Really nice job :D

Thank you for your critique! I agree about the figure posture being wonky--they were a super-fast last minute addition, if I'm going to be honest, and my figure anatomy leaves something to be desired, at best. XD I think I had some mental image of him pointing upward with the arm on that side, but couldn't figure out how to work it into the figures without it being weird.

The texture around the mountains is a good point, too. I think the suggestion of forests might be a good way to add some small detail there without it looking too busy.

Thank you for your comment! It was helpful. :D

I think textures are a very good suggestion. XD This was actually painted very quickly, by my standards, so I didn't take the time to go through and add grit and detail. I'm glad you like it, and I appreciate your suggestion! Will definitely implement it at some point. :D

I think this image is overall very well set-up and executed. The cross-diagonal composition is enjoyable and presents a simple but effective amount of movement due to the lamps, the mountains, and the clouds. The lamps stand out well against the dark setting and the moonlit night adds a serene quality.

For crits, I think the figures should be more prominent in the image; the viewer tends to relate to the figure and see through their eyes to an extent. Zooming in on the figures and allowing them to take up more space in the composition would, in my opinion, help the image catch the viewer's attention and add a sense of human emotion to the scene. They are currently very small and very dark - the lamp barely seems to lighting them at all - and they are set against an almost-as-dark background area so they blend into the background and easily missed. Another thing to keep in mind is your atmospheric perspective and how that affects light: areas that are closer to us should have a higher contrast than those farther away because there is less air/mist/fog/dust/whatever between us and the foreground areas. The lamp in the foreground is literally miles closer to us than the lamps far off in the distance, yet they are the same brightness which gives the nearer lamp the feeling that it is strangely dim, like the candle inside is going out. Brightening the nearer lamp and in turn brightening the figures would really push the contrast, the focus, and the sense of depth in the image.

SUCH DETAIL. I STAND IN AWE. Thank you so much for taking the time. Your observations and suggestions are superb stuff. :salutes: The bit about atmospheric perspective, that's a good one. Definitely agree the light needs a bit of amping up, and the contrast surrounding the figures needs more oomph. The point about bringing the figures nearer is very good, too. I think if I were to redo the piece, I would actually choose a less eye-of-god angle and pick something much closer to the couple, almost looking over their shoulder, down at the valley. It's very true that people tend to related to the figures in a piece, and having such a lofty view of the scene makes it quite distant.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I'm working my way down the forum thread and will do a return crit soon. You've a lovely gallery, by the way.

Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful! <3 And when you get to mine, don't hold back. I'm trying to rework it at the moment so I'd really like to know which areas in particular look weird and need help. Actually, you know what, maybe you should skip mine for now and just crit the new version when I'm done with it; otherwise you might just end up telling me to fix what I've already changed.

This is absolutely beautiful. The dark limited colour scheme really makes the lights stand out and gives it a very tranquil atmosphere. The little village is beautifully detailed as well.

I feel that the mountain in the background just isn't up to the same level as the rest of the picture, so it makes it look quite out of place. I think adding a few more shadows and maybe some rugged cliffs and edges would help. I think just a few more touch ups like that to it and it'll look more like part of the picture.

I can't see much else to critique on this, I think it's wonderful. I hope that others are able to help you more with it.

Love the concept and the execution. The composition and limited color scheme are great choices. I'd suggest maybe a few more stars closer to the horizon for consistency. Maybe the illumination of the clouds to the left of frame should fall off a little, since they're further away. Maybe some more detail in the mountain slopes; a few more jagged cliff faces among the the straight, smooth lines you've used to define contour. I love the silhouetted couple in the foreground and the gentle illumination around them. I'd maybe use slightly more intense yellows around their edges to make the silhouette easier to see and because the edges are closer to the lantern.

All told, I'd say this is a very successful piece as-is. Nice job.

Excellent, thoughtful suggestions, all of them. I appreciate your taking the time to check this out and leave such detailed feedback. I particularly agree with the color intensity around the couple need a boost. They do blend in a bit too much. I'll deffo fiddle with the mountains more, too. They do need a little oomph.

ANYWHOOZLES, thanks again! Glad you like. :D
